The metro in the city was launched in 1967. Today, the network is operated by Baku Metro. So far, Baku Metro includes three lines — red, green and purple — and five stations. The state programme envisages expansion of the metro network to five lines and 76 stations by 2030.

Train interval during peak hours does not exceed 5 minutes, the stations themselves are open for entry every day from six in the morning to midnight.

In the future, it is planned to extend the red metro line — from Azi Aslanov station by two stations and from Icheri-Sheher by four, so that the red line will eventually include 19 stations.

The green line already includes 19 stations, in addition, there is one branch with autonomous movement: «Jafar Jabbarli» — «Hatay». In the future, the green line is planned to become a ring line.

The purple line was opened in 2016, and so far it is the shortest. Soon another station «8 November» will be opened here.

Fare payment in the underground is made via BakiKart, and the card can be purchased at ticket machines. Children under the age of seven are entitled to free metro travel.
